Virginia State Troopers Locate & Charge Sunday Pursuit Suspect
A Rockingham County man faces multiple charges in both Augusta and Rockingham counties after leading Virginia State Police on a high-speed pursuit Sunday (July 18, 2010). Daniel Lee Smith, 21, was charged Wednesday afternoon (July 21, 2010) with two felony counts of eluding police and two counts of driving on a revoked license in each county. In Augusta County, Smith is also charged with reckless driving and for failing to register his motorcycle, failing to have a state inspection sticker on his motorcycle and for failing to have insurance for his motorcycle.
On Sunday afternoon shortly after 1 p.m., Virginia State Police Trooper T.M. Simmons attempted to stop Smith for speeding on Highway 11 in Augusta County. The orange motorcycle’s speed registered at 98 mph in the 55 mph zone. Smith refused to stop and a pursuit was initiated.
The pursuit continued northbound into Rockingham County towards Bridgewater and eventually circled back into Augusta County, where troopers discontinued the pursuit because of Smith’s high speeds and reckless driving.
Tuesday night (July 20, 2010) the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office took Smith into custody on unrelated charges. Once in custody, Sr. Trooper D.M. Fisher was able to question Smith concerning his role in Sunday’s pursuit. Further investigation by both troopers Fisher and Simmons led to Wednesday’s charges.
