Townhouse on Red River Drive Destroyed by Fire

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department units responded to a townhouse fire, Saturday, November 5, 2011, at approximately 1:40 p.m. in the Centreville area. The three-story townhouse is located at 14118 Red River Drive.

Firefighters encountered heavy fire and smoke coming from the front and rear, upwards to the roofs, and laterally to other townhomes upon arrival. The incident commander quickly struck a second alarm, bringing over 60 firefighters to the scene. Firefighters conducted an aggressive exterior fire attack and extinguished the fire in approximately 30 minutes, with minimal damage to adjacent townhomes. Four of the six occupants were home when the fire was started. The occupants were alerted by a sounding smoke alarm coming from the basement. Two adults, four children, and a dog have been displaced. Red Cross is assisting the family. There were no injuries.

The townhouse was a total loss.

According to fire investigators, the fire was started by a juvenile lighting matches in the basement.
