Stay Safe During Winter Storm

Loudoun County is vulnerable to severe winter weather, which can lead to injury or worse from hypothermia, heart attack, stroke and traffic crashes. Additionally, this winter, families are also susceptible to the H1N1 flu.

Winter weather presents many safety challenges and although staying indoors as much as possible can help reduce the risk of falls on the ice or traffic crashes, you may also face potential indoor hazards. Being prepared and following safety precautions can help you stay safe and warm through the winter season. The Loudoun County Fire-Rescue system wants to ensure the safety of residents this season by suggesting simple, low-cost steps that individuals and families can take to be ready. Simple steps to getting winter ready include setting aside emergency supplies, making a family emergency plan and staying informed about local conditions.

  • Get a kit – Emergency supplies for winter weather include, at a minimum, these basic items: three days food and water; a battery-powered radio with extra batteries; first-aid supplies; medications if needed; blankets and warm clothing; special needs items such as diapers; and pet items.
  • Make a plan – Choose an out-of-town relative or friend to be your family’s point of contact for emergency communications. Decide on a meeting place if your family cannot return home because of road closures. Discuss with your family what you would do in case of severe winter weather in Loudoun County. Write down your plan.
  • Stay informed – Before, during and after a winter storm, you should listen for up-to-date information from local media and emergency officials. Radio and television stations will provide updates concerning road conditions, winter storm watches and warnings, power outages and health information. To receive County weather alerts, you can sign up for ALERT Loudoun at www.loudoun.gov/ALERT. Make sure your battery-powered radio is working and you have extra batteries in case the electricity goes out.
  • Additional winter safety tips include:
  • Keep space heaters at least three feet from other objects and never leave space heaters unattended.
  • Avoid driving in ice or snow storms. If you must travel in bad weather, do so during daylight and drive slowly. Use main roads and inform someone of your travel route. It is advised to check current road conditions through Virginia’s Department of Transportation 511 system, by calling 511 or through their website at www.511virginia.org.
  • Test all smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to make certain they are working properly.
  • During a power outage, use flashlights as lighting sources.
  • Avoid exertion as cold weather puts extra strain on your heart. Remember to stay hydrated as well.
  • Make sure your home address is visible and take a few minutes to clear snow away from fire hdrants.

Taking preventive action is your best defense against having to deal with winter weather conditions. By preparing your family and home in advance for winter emergencies, you can reduce the risk of health and safety problems.
