Schools’ budget approved in Clarke
This is heralded as some sort of triumph but it is, in fact, a red herring. A distraction from the real issue of a bloated administration cutting an already inadequate teaching staff. The lack of leadership in the Clarke County school system will have devastating ramifications in the years to come. At least the kids will be able to play as their educational opportunities are wasted.
The uproar over the potential loss of middle-school sports in Clarke County has saved the program.
The School Board unanimously voted Thursday afternoon to approve its $23.6 million budget for fiscal year 2010 — but only after deciding to keep interscholastic middle-school athletics.
The board hopes to present its proposed budget to the Board of Supervisors Tuesday. The supervisors will then consider the funding request when they vote on the overall county budget April 14.
School officials, faced with a $1.33 million shortfall due to decreased funding from the county and state governments for the fiscal year that begins July 1, had been devising a plan to cut teachers, benefits, programs, and stipends throughout the district.
