After almost two weeks of continuous rain, the skies brightened just long enough for Sanders Corner Elementary School students to gather in front of the school on the morning of Friday, September 9th, to observe the 10thanniversary of September 11, 2001.

Students wore red-white-and-blue necklaces and patriotic outfits in tribute to the 9/11 first responders.

Donna Colombo, the Sanders Corner Elementary School PTA president, was the ceremony’s coordinator and presented the program’s opening remarks.

Lt. Joshua Allison from the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department, Greg Kelly of the Montgomery County, Md., Fire and Rescue Department, and Deputy Jason Leydig of the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office, led fifth grade safety patrol students Mitchell Colombo, David Setien and Matthew Smith in raising the American flag, the Loudoun County flag and the Freedom Flag at the school’s entrance. The Freedom Flag became a part of Virginia history when it was designated the state’s official symbol of remembrance honoring the victims and heroes of 9/11 by former Gov. Mark Warner.

Students recited the Pledge of Allegiance and sang “God Bless America” accompanied by Matt Neff of the United States Navy Band. The program ended…and immediately the rain resumed.

“At Sanders Corner we focus on respect and safety and the purpose of today’s ceremony was to reinforce our respect for the military and the first responders and how they risk their lives to keep us safe each day,”said Sanders Corner Elementary Principal Kathleen M. Hwang. “We fly the Freedom Flag each year on September 11thand since this year is the 10-year anniversary, we wanted to gather the school community together for a respectful ceremony honoring those who lost their lives.”
