Round Hill Elementary Gets Surprise Volunteer Straight From Afghanistan

Friday, September 23rd, was “Apple Day” in Kathy Childs’ first grade class at Round Hill Elementary.

Parent volunteers helped students weigh apples, rate the taste of various apple products and paint apple pictures.

One of the volunteers came from Afghanistan…

Kent Fisher is a foreign service officer with the State Department who has served for the past year at the U.S. Embassy in Kabul. He was home briefly in August to help his family move from Tampa, Fla., to Loudoun. Fisher got to spend only four nights in his new home before heading back to Afghanistan on August 10th.

Fisher was due to come home on September 26th, but managed to wangle an earlier flight. On Friday, he called Round Hill saying he’d be at the school in a couple hours with his wife, Susan, to surprise his daughters.

Principal Nancy McManus let Childs know that when she called the room to make a “delivery” it would be the signal that Kent Fisher was in the building.

The call came as Fisher’s daughter, Kimberly, was sampling some apple pie at the back of the classroom. Kimberly was stunned when her father came through the door, then broke into tears and ran into his arms. Kimberly quickly composed herself after a long hug and a bouquet from her father. She then led him back to the table where they sampled a pie Susan Fisher had baked.

After his visit to first grade, Kent Fisher went to the main office while his older daughter, Abigail, was called in from fourth grade. Abigail wondered if she was in trouble as McManus brought her into the office. “Are you ready to be happy?” McManus replied.

Kevin Fisher stepped out of a side door and Abigail was, indeed, happy.

Round Hill has “Star-Spangled School” as its theme this year. The Fisher family was honored by flag-waving students lining the hall as they departed for a “Fisher Family Night.”

The highlight of the day, however, was probably what Kent Fisher told Abigail as she hugged him in the office.

“I’m home for good. No more long trips.”
