Parent Charged in Accidental Shooting Incident
CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, VA – A man has been charged with recklessly leaving a loaded, unsecured firearm so as to endanger the life or limb of a child under the age of 14. The charge stems from a Nov. 26 accidental shooting incident during which a three-year-old shot herself in the hand.
Police said the parent briefly stepped into a neighboring room when the child discovered the gun on a dresser and removed the gun from its holster. The gun subsequently went off. The child’s family sought immediate medical attention and fully cooperated with police. Police are taking this opportunity to remind residents about the importance of gun safety and offer the following tips:
- Secure firearms in a locked gun safe. Keys should be kept in a separate secure location.
- Secure ammunition in a separate secure location
- Talk to children repeatedly about gun safety and the dangers guns pose
- Educate them about what to do when they encounter a gun. Stop, don’t touch and tell an adult
- Keep guns unloaded
- Use a cable-style gun lock
