Multi-Car Accident on Route 7 at Dranesville Road
Deputies responded to the area of Route 7 eastbound just west of Dranesville Road for a reported auto fire that was a result of a traffic crash. The chain reaction crash began with a minor two-car fender bender that had occurred near the Fairfax County line. The drivers of those vehicles stopped in the left lane roadway.
As further eastbound traffic converged on the intersection, vehicles began slowing for the stopped cars in the left lane. A 2003 Ford Expedition driven by Kenneth Paulovkin, 50, of Leesburg did not stop in time and struck a 2005 Jeep SUV driven by Erin Sexton, 29, of McLean, which was pushed into a 2006 Silver BMW driven by Betty Eddy, 61, of Vienna, which was pushed into a BMW SUV driven by Joseph Koshuta, 51, of Great Falls, which was pushed into a 1998 Chevy Suburban driven by Corinne Koshuta, 51, of Great Falls.
After the Ford Expedition struck the Jeep SUV, a 2005 Nissan four-door driven by Sean Degoey, 21, of Sterling struck the Ford Expedition driving it into the underside of the Jeep, which had rolled onto its passenger side. This exposed the fuel tank area.
Several passers-by assisted with removing Sexton from her burning vehicle. Traffic was diverted for at least three hours for the rescue effort, investigation, and vehicle recovery was completed. Sexton was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash and was transported to Washington Hospital center and was reported in stable condition.
Eddy is believed to have been wearing her seatbelt and her vehicle’s airbag did not deploy; she was transported to INOVA Loudoun Hospital, treated and released. Degoey was wearing his seatbelt and his airbag did deploy.
He was transported to Reston Hospital Center, treated and released. The cause of the crash is believed to be a combination of insufficient following distance and distracted driving.
Charges are pending.
