Loudoun Gov on Facebook and Twitter

The Office of Public Information has set up a Loudoun County Government Facebook page, a site on Twitter, and a channel on YouTube. Although social media outlets are often used for individual and personal information, more and more local, state and federal government agencies are offering news and information through social media.

Social media sites are becoming more accepted and used by people to keep informed and up-to-date regarding emergency information and quickly changing issues, according to Jim Barnes, the county’s Director of Public Information. The county’s YouTube Channel offers information in a video format.

Through the county’s website, www.loudoun.gov , the Office of Public Information has long used the Internet to keep the public informed. With the addition of social media sites, the information can immediately be delivered directly to residents. The county has also started to incorporate the use of social media in crisis and emergency planning. There is additional value to having a presence in the social media world especially during an emergency or crisis, Barnes said.

The county also offers Alert Loudoun, a voluntary alert system that sends emergency alerts, notification and updates electronically via e-mail, cell phones or pagers in a timely fashion.

Links to Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Alert Loudoun can be found on the Loudoun County homepage, www.loudoun.gov, in the “Get Connected” section.
