GodBlock – Vaporware or a Fund Drive?
The controversial internet filtering software GodBlock has made headlines lately by providing a free software to protect people from internet sites that promote religious beliefs. The company’s website says:
GodBlock is a web filter that blocks religious content. It is targeted at parents and schools who wish to protect their kids from the often violent, sexual, and psychologically harmful material in many holy texts, and from being indoctrinated into any religion before they are of the age to make such decisions. When installed properly, GodBlock will test each page that your child visits before it is loaded, looking for passages from holy texts, names of religious figures, and other signs of religious propaganda. If none are found, then your child is allowed to browse freely.
But people are starting to wonder if it is a big hoax. While the site is full of comments and quotes from celebs like Penn Jilette, no one seems to have successfully downloaded the software. An attempt to download will prompt a message saying:
We’re sorry! GodBlock isn’t ready yet. But please join the mailing and we’ll let you know as soon as it is. Include your mailing address and we will send you 10 free GodBlock stickers!
Unfortunately, due to overwhelming demand, I can no longer give away stickers. But please do make a donation and I will send you some! This donation will not only get you 10 awesome stickers, but it will help with the overall development of the project. Thanks!
So it seems the product is only “half-baked” or that visitors to the site are being victimized by a fund drive. Either way the PR strategy seems to have worked. We may never know if the software does as well.
