The Friends of the Washington and Old Dominion Trail (FOWOD) presented the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office with a $500 check last week.

The monies will be used to support the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office Bike Patrol Team. Loudoun Sheriff’s Deputies volunteer for this duty which is performed in conjunction with their normal patrol duties. Members of the team frequently patrol areas that are not accessible by motor vehicle; including the Washington and Old Dominion Trail (W&OD).

FOWOD is a citizen driven organization dedicated to protecting and improving the W & OD trail. The purpose of the FOWOD is to support and enhance the Washington and Old Dominion Railroad Regional Park as a recreational, environmental and historic resource through the volunteer efforts in fundraising, promotion, educational programming and maintenance.

The W&OD trail was built on the roadbed of the former Washington & Old Dominion Railroad and stretches 45 miles through the urban heartland and countryside of Northern Virginia from Purcellville to Arlington. A majority of the trail runs through Loudoun County, VA.
