Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Station Roof Collapses
The roof of Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Station 10, Bailey’s Crossroads, collapsed Monday, February 8, 2010, at approximately 3 a.m. The station is located at 3601 Firehouse Lane, Falls Church.
Firefighters were alerted by a loud screeching noise in the apparatus bay. Personnel discovered the roof had fallen in on the apparatus parked in the four-bay station. All 18 personnel escaped unharmed. Personnel were relocated to Fire and Rescue Station 8, Annandale.
A fire engine, ladder truck, three EMS units, and a utility truck were all extensively damaged. Several personally-owned vehicles parked next to the station were totaled. There was minimal damage to the administrative and living area of the station.
Upon shift change at 7 a.m., firefighters from the oncoming shift resumed operational response with a paramedic engine, and ambulance from the parking lot of the station. Despite the roof collapse, residents in the area continued to receive all-hazards emergency response service, 24/7.
The station is not inhabitable. Timetable for reoccupying the station is undetermined. Damage estimate is undetermined.
The station was built in 1974, and is owned by the Bailey’s Crossroads Volunteer Fire Department. The roof was replaced in 1998.
