Dominion Student’s Artwork Displayed in Washington
An artwork by Dominion High School senior Cassandra Nguyen is being displayed in Washington, D.C., after being awarded a gold medal in the 2009 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards.
Nguyen’s work was one of 500 chosen for the gold medal from a field of 140,000 submissions. From those 500 gold medalists, the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities chose 100 works to be displayed at its Pennsylvania Avenue headquarters for one year.
Nguyen’s artwork, “Metaphysical Self Portrait,” was among the 100 works selected for display. “Metaphysical Self Portrait” is an artwork through which a student must portray themselves without drawing their physical appearance. The artist must represent themselves through a depiction of their favorite time of day, where they would live, their favorite animal and their favorite things to do.
Nguyen’s work was a mixed-media piece, including paint, colored pencil and a collage. Her work is being displayed in the front office of the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities at 1100 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, Suite 526 (where the old post office is). This is a secure building, so you need to make an appointment to view Nguyen’s work. (The phone number is 202-682-5409, the e-mail pcah@pcah.gov.)
Nguyen was honored at a special ceremony on October 27th at the Lyndon Baines Johnson Education Building in Washington.
An Advanced Placement (AP) art student at Dominion, Nguyen has submitted a 2-D portfolio to this year’s Scholastic Art and Writing Awards competition.
