Dog gives boost to kingston pest control business

Several U.S. pest control companies offer working dogs trained for locating bugs and mold. There’s even a professional accreditation association -the National Entomology Scent Detection Canine Association – that was formed to make sure scent detection dog standards are upheld.

Alley said he knew his business would have an advantage if it had a certified pest detection dog on staff, so he contacted Whitstine and purchased Sophie from him about five years ago.

While Sophie’s training came with a $20,000 price tag, her ability to sense pests within moments of entering a room makes her much more valuable, Alley said. And, he said he is unaware of any other local business that has a canine exterminator on its staff.
