Beginning Monday, Jan. 30, and continuing through June, customers who use Saintsbury Drive to access the Vienna/Fairfax Metro station from Nutley Street will be rerouted. A portion of Saintsbury Drive will temporarily become a one-way street to allow for the construction of utilities and roadway widening. Detour signs will direct customers from Nutley Street to Lee Highway to Vaden Drive and to Saintsbury Drive.

The change to Saintsbury Drive is the first phase of construction work as part of a larger adjacent construction project that will include new Metrobus transit facilities on the south side of the station, new access roadways, and new residential, retail and office space south of Vienna-Fairfax/GMU station. The new Metro south bus transit facilities and new access roadways are expected to be completed by the end of this year, while the mixed-use, transit-oriented-development project is expected to be completed over several years.

Future construction phases will include a temporary relocation of bus stops to the north and south sides of the station in early March 2012, and the closure or relocation of metered parking spaces over several months. Parking in the station’s two garages and surface lots will not be affected.

When construction is completed, bus customers will have 12 new bus bays and shelters with a continuous canopy to station entrance, expanded roadway capacity, new traffic signals and improved pedestrian and bicycle paths.

The station serves approximately 13,600 people on an average weekday.

The Director of Public Works, Dennis Johnson and his staff will provide information and field questions regarding proposed changes to the Town’s refuse program, including how and when trash, recycling, bulk items and brush materials are collected. Residents are encouraged to attend and provide their comments and suggestions on the proposed program changes.
