Leesburg, VA (November 4, 2011) – On Sunday, October 30, 2011, at the 2011 United States Tennis Association (USTA) League National Championships in Indian Wells, California, the Leesburg women’s team defeated the Lake Oswego (OR) team to capture their first 3.0 Senior National Championship.

The Leesburg senior women’s tennis team went undefeated in their quest for the national championship. On August 28, 2011, the team won the District Tournament in Wintergreen, Virginia. From there, the ladies went on to win the Sectional Championship at Newport News, Virginia on September 9, 2011. At each tournament, the team won every match.

“We have a great group of senior players in the Leesburg/Loudoun community, and we are very proud of them,” said Moses Gittens, Head Tennis Professional at Leesburg’s Ida Lee Tennis Center. “The Middleburg Tennis Club won the 4.0 Senior National Championship two weeks ago. Last week was Leesburg’s turn at the 3.0 level. These championships say a lot about local league tennis in Leesburg and Loudoun County.”

MIDDLEBURG, VA –For the fifth year in a row – each year that the event has been in existence – Foxcroft School had the largest contingent Sunday (Oct. 9) at Nanette’s Walk to support the Cherry Blossom Breast Cancer Foundation.

Thanks to the leadership of junior Mary Motion, who lost her mother to cancer when she was 8, and Foxcroft’s Assistant Head of School Sheila McKibbin, more than 60 students, faculty, and administrators showed their support for the fight against the disease by walking. They raised $3,750 — more than 10 percent of the total raised at the walk. Foxcroft has a goal of $5,000 this year and expects to meet that with the proceeds from January’s “Think Pink” basketball tournament and continued sale of pink shoelaces and pink hair/horse braids is expected to raise the rest.

All told, Nanette’sWalk raised $37,000 with about 300 participants, volunteers and sponsors. Separate concurrent events were held in Warrenton and Leesburg, boosting the total raised by the “Cherry Blossom Walks and Runs for Breast Cancer” to $80,000 with more than 800 participants and supporters

The Walk is named in honor of Nanette Hewitt White, a Middleburg civic leader who lost a ten-year battle against breast cancer. The proceeds benefit the Cherry Blossom Breast Cancer Foundation, which plans to grant 90% of the Walks/Runs money to Fauquier and Loudoun charities for breast cancer detection, treatment, and education, and 10% to regional research, including the Georgetown Lombardi Cancer Center

When completed in December 2012, Route 50 in Aldie will be transformed from a through highway to a village street, similar to the traffic calming project completed in Upperville.

Drivers approaching Aldie will be transitioned to the town speed limit with landscaping, sidewalks, and raised crosswalks and intersections in the village area.

A series of pavers will be spaced to get drivers’ attention. At the entrance to the village, the speed limit changes to 25 mph.

Traffic calming measures within Aldie include raised intersections, tree-planted medians, varying paving materials to indicate parking, walking, and driving areas, strategically placed greenery along the streets, and safer pedestrian walkways.

Drainage improvements will enclose a deep roadside ditch with a storm sewer system.

The materials used for the sidewalks, curbs, crosswalks, and raised intersections have been chosen to complement the historic and rural nature of the community.

The $7.2 million price tag includes $2.1 million for design, $300,000 for right of way acquisition and $4.8 million for construction.

This is the third traffic calming project on the rural Route 50 corridor in Fauquier and Loudoun counties designed to slow traffic, improve safety for pedestrians and motorists, and help preserve the historic and rural nature of the corridor.

The $7.8 million Upperville traffic calming project was completed in fall 2008, and the $16.1 million Gilberts Corner project, which replaced intersection with roundabouts, was completed in 2009.

The groundbreaking will be held on Route 50 in Aldie at 10 a.m. Oct. 7. More information on the projects is available at www.Route50.org and www.VirginiaDOT.org.
