At 10:30 am, on Wednesday, November 16, 2011, Town of Leesburg officials will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony for the grand opening of Firebirds Wood-Fired Grill at 1607 Village Market Boulevard, Suite 100 in the Village at Leesburg.

Firebirds is the creative concept of owner and restaurateur Dennis Thompson. Mr. Thompson is also the co-founder of the Lone Star Steakhouse and Fox and Hound sports bar chains. Under the operation of General Manager Shannon Orleans, guests can enjoy well-seasoned steaks grilled over an open flame, generous burgers, oversized salads, herb roasted prime rib, fresh seafood and more created by Head Chef Mike Webb. The Leesburg site marks the 20th location for the company nationwide and the fourth in Virginia.

The restaurant features an indoor stone fireplace, dark woods, bold colors and stacked stone columns that create a cozy, dining room setting while the exposed kitchen showcases the flurry of activity with smoky aromas from the hardwood flames. Seasonally, guests can also dine al fresco in the outdoor patio.

“Grilling over the open flame gives all of our food a tremendous flavor,” says Thompson. “Our blend of bold seasonings, spices and sauces is designed to create an innovative style of American cuisine that makes each dish flavorful from beginning to end.”

“Firebirds brings a strong reputation of excellent customer service and inventive cuisine to the variety of dining options in the Leesburg community,” said Leesburg Economic Development Manager Marantha Edwards. “Firebirds is an excellent addition to the Village at Leesburg.”

The Thomas Birkby House, a wedding and special event venue located in Leesburg’s historic downtown, is featured on the Martha Stewart Weddings website, as one of “50 Ways to Wed in the United States.” The website article lists one destination wedding site in each of the fifty states.

The historic Birkby House was renovated as an event center in 1999 by the present owners Ronald Rust and Judy Kozacik. The half-acre property was an original lot when Leesburg was platted in 1757. The house was built in the 1770’s and the carriage house, one of a very few historic industrial buildings in Leesburg, dates back to 1814. The venue began doing events in 2000 and has hosted more than 500 weddings since that time. Their focus is on garden events in immaculately Picture 3maintained gardens in a true historic setting. The site can accommodate up to 150 guests and hosts only one event per day, with an emphasis on having the entire wedding event, from ceremony to reception, at one convenient location.

In addition to the Martha Stewart feature, the Birkby House was also selected as a “Best Wedding Venue” by Northern Virginia Magazine in 2008.

“We are very pleased to be selected as the Virginia site by the prestigious Martha Stewart Weddings,” said Ron Rust. “We strive to anticipate the needs of the wedding couple and their guests while featuring the historic property and its location in the Historic District of Leesburg.”

The Securities and Exchange Commission today announced that Thomas A. Bayer has been appointed as the SEC’s new Chief Information Officer (CIO) and will oversee the agency’s information technology functions.

Mr. Bayer comes to the SEC from Maris Technology Advisors in Leesburg, Va., where he advised banking and financial services clients on technology strategy, software development, and program management solutions. In his new role directing daily operations in the SEC’s Office of Information Technology (OIT), Mr. Bayer will oversee applications development, maintenance, infrastructure, and user support for the agency. He will report to Jeff Heslop, who was named the agency’s first-ever Chief Operating Officer earlier this year.

The SEC is in the process of revamping its technology systems for reviewing tips, complaints, and investigative leads and referrals provided by whistleblowers or other sources. The agency also is undertaking various technology initiatives to provide the infrastructure and software necessary to implement various regulatory requirements under the Dodd-Frank Act.

“Tom possesses the wide-ranging experience and technology strategy necessary to effectively manage our OIT operations as the agency continues to meet new challenges and develop new technology solutions,” said Mr. Heslop. “Tom can provide expert leadership as we continue to vastly improve our technology for receiving thousands of tips, complaints and referrals from the public. He will spearhead our continuing transition from a disclosure system that’s document-based to a system that’s data-based and more useful for investors.”

Mr. Bayer added, “The SEC plays a critical role in our government and our nation’s economy, and I’m pleased to join an agency where technology is of ever-increasing importance as we serve the financial markets and the investing public.”

“As the North American market continues to be focused toward sustainable building practices that deliver on energy efficiency, ecologically-minded material use and renewable energy sourcing, we are committed to helping our customers, partners and community members understand how best to proceed in this regard,” said Dr. Kathleen Saylor, chief executive officer for REHAU North America. “As part of this goal, we have designed the REHAU Polymer Solutions Center as a structure in which all of our sustainable building technologies can be seen ‘in action’, operating in an integrated fashion as harmonious, whole-building solutions.”

The 1,150 square foot building will feature a comprehensive scope of renewable energy and HVAC systems, including geothermal energy collection, solar collection, ground-source ventilation and radiant heating and cooling technologies. The center, designed by architect Sheilah Gregg, will also incorporate sustainable building technologies from REHAU partner organizations, such as the AMVIC insulated concrete form (ICF) wall, floor and ceiling systems.

“REHAU’s leadership in this new direction is consistent with their progressive corporate philosophy,” commented Marantha Edwards, Leesburg’s Economic Development Manager. “We’re proud that REHAU is making this investment in the Town, and continues to call Leesburg their home.”

REHAU is an international polymer innovator in the construction, automotive and industry sectors based in Switzerland. The company established its North American headquarters in Leesburg in 1979. The REHAU North American headquarters currently oversees activities across 16 sales offices, 7 plants and 1 distribution center throughout the U.S., Canada, Mexico and Central America. (NYSE: MOT). The system, which was installed by Motorola and operational in less than 12 months from contract signing, also marks the first large-scale deployment of APX™ 7000 multi-band portable radios for fire and EMS.

The upgraded countywide system provides improved in-building interoperable digital communications among all towns in Loudoun County. It also gives public safety agencies in the county the continued ability to communicate with surrounding counties in the National Capital Region, allowing for mutual aid capabilities on a single platform. The state-of-the-art system also includes high performance data capabilities and TDMA technology for greater frequency capacity. A second phase of the Motorola deployment will include the addition of Project 25 (P25) Phase 2 TDMA technology, expected in 2012.

“There was tremendous teamwork and cooperation between Loudoun County staff and Motorola to meet the challenging timeline for completion and installation of this major communications system upgrade to replace our aging equipment,” said Interim Chief W. Keith Brower, Jr., Loudoun County Fire, Rescue and EMS. “We are excited to have the upgraded voice and high-speed data capabilities provided by this latest Motorola ASTRO 25 technology that will keep us completely connected with other agencies within and surrounding the National Capital Region.”

The upgrade also included the replacement of a microwave system in less than two months, the replacement of a low-band paging system and the addition of 1,300 Motorola APX 7000 portable two way radios with integrated GPS. As the industry’s first P25 multi-band (700/800 MHz and VHF) family of subscriber radios, the APX communicates with P25 FDMA systems and future P25 Phase 2 TDMA systems.

On Thursday, September 2, 2010, the Leesburg Town Council, Leesburg Airport Commission and Town staff will celebrate the completion of new aircraft hangars on the South Apron at the Leesburg Executive Airport. At 6:00 p.m., prior to the Leesburg Airport Commission’s regular monthly meeting, Town officials will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony in front of the hangars.

“Continued growth of airport capabilities is a major goal for the Town” said Dennis Boykin, Chairman of the Leesburg Executive Airport Commission. “Airports are about commerce, not about airplanes, and we need to continually strive to add facilities in order support economic development. As an important part of our transportation infrastructure, the Airport needs to stay ahead of demand. Adding additional hangars brings additional businesses, and with that, additional economic development.”

The South Apron Hangar project includes ten new T-hangars and six new executive aircraft hangars. These hangars replace T-hangars that were damaged in a snowstorm in 2002 and demolished. With the completion of these hangars, the Leesburg Executive Airport now has 46 T-hangars and 11 executive aircraft hangars.

“When the Town updated the Airport Master Plan in 2006, we identified the need for more hangar space,” explained Tim Deike, Airport Director. “The demand has been constant for aircraft hangars. Currently, we have 32 people waiting for T-hangar space and 30 people on the waiting list for tie-downs. By increasing our based aircraft population through leasing tie-downs and hangars, the Airport becomes more financially sustainable.”

Construction of the South Apron Hangars began in April 2009 and the hangars were completed in August 2010. The total project cost was $2.8 million. The Town of Leesburg received $929,568 in funding from the Virginia Department of Aviation for the project site work which included taxiways, drainage improvements and fencing.

The hangar project is Phase Two of the airport’s overall plan for the development of the South Apron. Complete in Spring 2009, Phase One expanded the South Apron by two acres and created an additional 31 paved aircraft tie-down spaces. Phase Three will expand the paved aircraft parking area again, providing additional aircraft tie-down spaces, and will relocate the existing fuel farm. Phase Three is scheduled to begin construction in Spring 2014.

The moving company signed a 10.5-year, 64,539-square-foot lease at 23000 Ladbrook Drive in Dulles, VA, according to its real estate advisor, Studley. The $8 million investment is expected to bring an estimated 50 jobs into Loudoun County.“Ward North American is a welcome addition to Loudoun County’s growing business community,” said Board of Supervisors Chairman Scott K. York. “This announcement highlights the benefit of Loudoun’s unique offering of varied business corridors which provide a broad range of real estate product types unlike any other jurisdiction in the region. We proudly welcome Ward North American, and look forward to participating in their continued success and growth as members of the Loudoun County business community.”The San Antonio-based moving company selected the new location based on its access to major transportation routes and proximity to its growing corporate client base and traditional government traffic. The Department of Economic Development assisted with this fast-moving project by facilitating incentives with the Commonwealth of Virginia, assisting with process, and providing community information for relocating executives.”This is a location that perfectly matched our selection criteria. The new facility in Dulles allows Ward to continue to provide seamless and cost-effective relocations for many corporations having a physical presence in the D.C. area and, of course, the U.S. government as well,” said Ward North American President Kevin Ankenbauer.
