Thursday evening a 17 year-old Danny S. Somoza was riding a 2006 Baja Dirtrunner dirt bike with friends around 9:48 p.m. on August 5, 2010 when he struck the gate at the entrance to the ball fields at Claude Moore Park. The gates are located east of Cascades Parkway and were closed across the roadway. Somoza struck the gate at an undetermined speed and was separated from the motorcycle and sustained life-threatening injuries. Somoza was transported to the Lansdowne Campus of INOVA Loudoun Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Four Virginia conservation enforcement officers converged on the Shenandoah River near Watermelon Park on July 17th for two days of targeted enforcement designed to stem a rash of illegal cast net and spear-gun fishing that has devastated wildlife populations in the area. The “sting” operation resulted in seventeen misdemeanor citations for ten illegal anglers and impoundment of six cast nets. As of 2 p.m. Saturday (July 31) gates into Fort A. P. Hill are temporarily closed to incoming traffic.
At this time Fort A.P. Hill is reassessing its capacity for safely handling additional visitors onto the post. The number of visitors and vehicles on the installation is currently being monitored and as capacity to handle additional visitors becomes available, the gates will be reopened.

Police seized approximately 115 pounds of marijuana during a highway interdiction operation on Wednesday, July 21. Two officers participating in the operation stopped an 18-wheeler for an equipment violation around 6:30 p.m. on Interstate 495 near Van Dorn Street. An investigation revealed the marijuana in the truck’s attached trailer.
